Be. Starter FAQs

Are you a small organisation wanting to make a start on your accessibility journey?

The Be. Starter Package could be for you. Read our frequently asked questions to find out more.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Be. Starter Package?

The Be. Starter Package consists of:

  • An Online Self-Assessment
  • An Accessibility Report, tailored to your organisation
  • A one-hour online session with a Be. Accessibility Coach, where you can ask questions and receive feedback and guidance on your accessibility journey.

2. Who is this tool for?

The Be. Starter Accessibility Assessment is suitable for small organisations (20 employees or fewer) at the start of their accessibility journey.

If you are wanting to become a more inclusive and accessible business but don't know where to start, this is a great first step.

3. What are the benefits of the Be. Starter Package?

The Be. Starter Package builds your awareness of what accessibility is, who it is for and how you can incorporate accessibility across all that you do, in a simple step-by-step process. It's a great way to start moving your organisation towards greater accessibility, and opening your business to a wider customer and employee base.

4. What is involved with the self-assessment?

Once you select “Get Started” you will be directed to a payment page.

Once payment is submitted, the self-assessment will be ready to go.

Please ensure you submit your contact details on the first page of the assessment so that your self-assessment link can be emailed to you. Your receipt for payment will also be emailed to you via the address you provide.

5. How long will it take to complete the self-assessment?

The self-assessment will take you approximately 1 hour.  However, this will depend on the size of your premises.

There will be questions you can answer straight away, and others you may need additional support for, or to go to a specific location (e.g. your kitchen or bathroom).

We recommend using a portable device or tablet to make it easier to move around and review specific areas of your organisation.

6. What areas of accessibility are covered in the self-assessment?

Be. Starter covers critical areas of accessibility on your customer or visitor journey such as, website, communications, staff and culture and physical environment, including emergency and evacuation procedures.

7. What happens after I complete the online assessment?

Your Accessibility Report will be sent to the email address that you entered at the start of the assessment.

Two weeks after completing the assessment you will be contacted to make a time for your online consultation with a Be. Accessibility Coach.

8. What will the Accessibility Report entail?

Once you have completed your self-assessment, your organisation will receive an accessibility report based on the answers you provide. Your report will include aspects of what you are doing well, recommendations you will be able to implement straight away, and recommendations that will require further time and investment.

We recommended you consider the accessibility report in its entirety and then work on things as they are relevant to your organisation, and as time and budget allow.

9. Will we receive a score or rating for our self-assessment?

There is no score or rating given. The self-assessment is a resource and guide to get started on your accessibility journey, and to prioritise the areas that make sense for your organisation. Be. can support you to communicate your accessibility journey in a meaningful way to the disabled and access community.

10. What is the purpose of the Online Consultation?

Your one-hour Online Consultation allows you to discuss the accessibility recommendations in your report with an experienced Accessibility Coach. Your Accessibility Coach can answer your questions and give clarity on any aspects of the report that you need.

11. How much does it cost?

The entire Be. Starter Package costs $500 + GST.

12. Can I save my progress and return to complete the self-assessment at a later time?

Yes, you can save your progress at any point during the self-assessment.

Ensure you have entered your email address at the beginning of the assessment, so a link to return to the online assessment can be sent via email.

13. What format will the report be provided in?

You will receive the report as a PDF document which will be emailed to you.  If you require alternative formats, please email emily@belab.co.nz

14. I'm from a large organisation - is the Be. Starter Package right for me?

For larger organisations (that have more than 20 employees or multiple premises) we recommend you review our other services on our Be. Services webpage.

If you would like to discuss any of our services with our team please e-mail info@belab.co.nz

15. Is Be. Starter accessible?

The self-assessment is navigable using a keyboard.

It is not currently able to be navigated solely using a screen reader. We are working with Brilliant Assessments to fix this.

If you require assistance please contact emily@belab.co.nz

16. We're from an online organisation - is Be. Starter right for us?

Yes. Be. Starter provides a holistic approach to accessibility, that covers areas such as staff and culture and website that are important for all organisations to consider.  There are components in Be. Starter that will assist you regarding your website and product offering.

17. Will Be. Starter assess the accessibility of my website?

Your accessibility report will give you an overview of your basic website accessibility and provide you with top tips to help you understand more about accessible website requirements. However, Be.  Starter is not a digital assessment of your website.

For a full digital accessibility assessment, we recommend you contact our partners in digital accessibility Access Advisors.
